Mobility

I'm posting this from my mobile phone while simultaneously playing with my dog and watching TV. I'm not fully paying attention to any of it.

I believe that multitasking is quite possibly ruining my life. Doing one thing at a time bores me and I lose interest. I don't fully invest myself into an activity and so my experiences are all shallow and relatively meaningless.

This has pretty much always been the case at home where my computer, television and video games distract from interactions with family and friends. Now that a variety of wireless mobile gadgets and gizmos allow me to access a phone line, the internet and even television while I'm out and about, I find myself paying even less attention to the people and places around me.

These toys are supposed to help me get connected so I can stay in touch but by providing a constant distraction, they are actually causing me to be more isolated and disconnected.

Don't get me wrong, I love gadgets and I believe that recent advancements in communications technology have been good for humanity as a whole. I'm only making an observation about my own behavior.

I would set forth an action plan and make a public vow to be more involved in my own life but there's something shiney in the other room that has caught my eye.
